Acon Laboratories On Call Express Blood Glucose Test Strips
PRODUCT DETAILS
Acon Laboratories On Call Express blood glucose test strips measure the glucose in a whole blood sample, for self-testing at home. Sold as 50 test strips. A drop of whole blood from the fingertip, forearm or palm is applied to the strip, and the On Call Express meter shows the result as a plasma-equivalent value.
Key Features and Benefits
- Results in 4 seconds with only a 0.4 µL blood sample.
- No coding required; auto calibration circuitry in every strip.
- Audible fill detection and redosing to avoid wasted strips.
- Measures from 20 to 600 mg/dL.
Compatibility
These strips are made for the On Call Express Blood Glucose Monitoring System and fit the On Call Express, Express Voice and Express Mobile meters, which read the strip and show the result on the meter display.
Understanding Your Reading
The meter measures from 20 to 600 mg/dL. A “HI” message means the result is above 600 mg/dL and a “LO” message means it is below 20 mg/dL, both outside the meter’s range, and the test should be retaken. The control ranges printed on the test strip vial are not blood glucose targets; your personal target range is set by your care team. As a general guide, targets are often before a meal 80 to 130 mg/dL and under 180 mg/dL about two hours after a meal starts.
Limits
This system is for single patient use and should not be shared, and it is not for use on multiple patients. Do not share with others. Do not share them with anyone. Do not share them with anyone including other family members. Never share lancets or the lancing device with other people. It should not be used for the diagnosis of diabetes. Alternative Site Testing (AST) should not be used to calibrate continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) nor for use in insulin dose calculations. It is not for use on critically ill patients, patients in shock, severely dehydrated patients or hyperosmolar patients, and not for newborns. Very high (above 60%) or very low (below 25%) hematocrit can give false results. Do not use with serum or plasma samples. Abnormally high vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in blood may cause inaccurately high results. Use forearm or palm testing only when glucose is steady. If the control solution test results do not fall within their respective ranges, do not use the system to test blood, as the system may not be working properly.
Storage and Handling
Store the strips in a cool, dry place between 41 and 86 °F (5 to 30 °C) and 10 to 90 percent relative humidity, out of direct sunlight, and not in a bathroom. A new vial may be used for 6 months after being first opened.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How to Use Blood Glucose Test Strips?
Follow these steps for accurate readings:
- Wash your hands and dry them thoroughly.
- Insert the test strip into your glucose meter.
- Prick your fingertip with a lancet to draw a small drop of blood.
- Apply the blood sample to the test strip’s designated area.
- Wait for the results to display on your meter.
For best results, always follow the instructions provided with your glucose test strips and meter.
Do Blood Glucose Test Strips Expire?
Yes, blood glucose test strips do expire, and using them past their expiration date can lead to inaccurate readings. The expiration date is printed on the packaging, and exposure to air, humidity, and extreme temperatures can also affect their accuracy. Some test strips may come with a vial that contains a desiccant to help maintain stability, but it's always best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and discard expired strips. If you're unsure whether your test strips are still reliable, consult your healthcare provider or compare results with a control solution for accuracy.
How Do Blood Glucose Test Strips Work?
Blood glucose test strips contain enzymes and electrodes that react with blood sugar levels. When blood is applied, the strip sends an electrical signal to the meter, which then displays the glucose reading.
Are Blood Glucose Test Strips Accurate?
Yes, FDA-approved test strips from brands like OneTouch Verio, Contour Next, Accu-Chek, and FreeStyle are designed for high accuracy. However, results may vary due to factors like expired strips, improper storage, or incorrect usage.
How to Dispose of Blood Glucose Test Strips?
Used blood glucose test strips should be disposed of properly in a sharps container or biohazard waste bin, especially if contaminated with blood. Check your local disposal regulations for medical waste.
How Often Should You Test Blood Sugar?
The frequency of blood sugar testing depends on your diabetes type and treatment plan. Most people with diabetes test their blood sugar multiple times a day, especially before meals and bedtime. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized recommendations.
