The Abbott Precision Xtra system is a blood glucose and ketone monitoring meter for home or professional use in the management of diabetes. One meter measures both blood glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate (β-Ketone), the most important of the ketone bodies circulating in the bloodstream. Glucose tests run on a fresh whole blood sample from the fingertip, or from the forearm, upper arm, or base of the thumb; ketone tests use fingertip blood only. It runs Precision Xtra blood glucose test strips and Precision Xtra blood β-Ketone test strips, so a single device covers routine glucose checks and ketone checks. This product carries the meter, both lines of test strips, and kits that pair the meter with the strips it runs.

Important Usage Limits
Ketone tests use fresh capillary (fingertip) blood only; the meter has not been evaluated for alternative sites. Blood glucose tests may be done from the fingertip, forearm, upper arm, or base of the thumb. Calibration: before using a new box of test strips, calibrate the monitor with the calibrator packaged inside that box (the glucose calibrator is white, the β-Ketone calibrator is purple); use only the calibrator that is packaged in the box of test strips you are using. Do not use a test strip if its foil packet is punctured or torn or the strip is expired; check the expiration date printed on the foil packet and box. Never share your lancing device or lancet with another person. Do not use the meter if the Display Check does not exactly match the picture in the user's guide, for example if a digit on the display does not match the one in the guide. Healthcare professionals performing blood tests with this system on multiple patients must always wear gloves and should follow the infection control policies and procedures approved by their facility. They may use venous whole blood with the β-Ketone strips only if the samples are used within 30 minutes of collection; home users use fresh capillary (fingertip) blood. Precision Point of Care blood glucose test strips are for healthcare professional use only; they are different from Precision Xtra strips and are not the ones this store sells.
What a Blood Glucose Result Means
A blood glucose result is the amount of glucose (blood sugar) in your blood, read in mg/dL. Food choices, medicines, and physical activity move that number through the day, and some change is normal. When it runs too high or too low it can cause problems, which is why people with diabetes check it regularly - monitoring helps them see what affects their numbers and find patterns.
What Ketone Results Mean
Blood β-Ketone results are expected to be lower than 0.6 mmol/L. They may be higher when a person is ill, is fasting, exercises vigorously, or if blood glucose levels are not controlled. Ketone levels build up when the body does not have enough insulin to allow blood sugar into the cells for energy and the liver breaks down fat for fuel, producing acids called ketones. When too many are produced too fast, they can accumulate to dangerous levels in a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious complication of diabetes that can be life-threatening and is most common in type 1 diabetes, though people with type 2 diabetes can develop it as well.
- 0.6 to 1.5 mmol/L with a blood glucose result of 300 mg/dL (16.7 mmol/L) or higher: a problem requiring medical assistance may be occurring - contact your healthcare professional and follow their sick-day instructions
- A result that remains high or becomes higher than 1.5 mmol/L: you may be at risk of developing diabetic ketoacidosis - contact your healthcare professional immediately
- When a blood glucose result is 300 mg/dL (16.7 mmol/L) or higher, KETONES? flashes on and off on the display; if you check your ketones as part of your diabetes management program, it is recommended that you check your blood β-Ketone
- A reading above 8.0 mmol/L shows HI; repeat the test with a new strip, and if HI shows again, contact your healthcare professional immediately
