BD (Becton Dickinson) Is Now Embecta - Same Products under a New Name

BD Is Now embecta — Same Products, New Name

In a recent rebranding, BD’s (Becton, Dickinson) Diabetes Care division has officially become embecta. This change is purely in branding, the manufacturer, part numbers, and product quality remain unchanged, just under the new name: embecta.

What’s Changing and What’s Not

  • Manufacturer: Still BD, now operating as embecta.
  • Manufacturing process: Manufacturing process and the materials used have not changed. Products are made in the same facilities and undergo the same quality control procedures at embecta as they did under BD.
  • Product Quality: Identical to previous BD products.
  • Part Numbers: All existing NDC/HRI numbers remain valid, now paired with NRCs for updated pharmacy systems.

embecta Packaging FAQs

What is embecta?

embecta is the leading producer of insulin injection devices in the world. Our broad portfolio of products, complemented by education, training, and support resources, helps people with diabetes deliver their insulin correctly. We are solely focused on diabetes and are committed to advancing what's next in diabetes care.

Why did embecta spin off from BD?

In an effort to provide the right level of focus in the diabetes space, BD spun off their diabetes care business into a new company, embecta. This allows embecta the room to specialize in the diabetes market both with the pen needles and insulin syringes that are provided today, while focusing on developing new and innovative solutions that will improve the lives of people with diabetes going forward.

What happened to BD diabetes products?

BD pen needles and insulin syringes are now part of embecta. BD continues to sell other medical devices outside of the diabetes care space. For the past few years, embecta has been selling BD pen needles and insulin syringes. At this time, these products are being transitioned to new embecta packaging. Rest assured, you will continue to receive the same quality products, just with a new look.

Why is BD no longer in the brand name?

embecta is a different company than BD, and as part of that transition, we need to brand the products as embecta. The embecta products are the same products, with the same manufacturing and quality, just brought to you now by embecta.

So, what is changing?

The packaging design of our products is changing. We will have a new look that represents the embecta brand, but the products are the same products you know and trust.

For pen needle users, the color of the box will remain the same. For example, if you use a 4 mm pen needle the box will still be green.

If you are an insulin syringe user, you may notice a change to the color of your box. This was done in an effort to align the color of the box to the needle length. For 6 mm syringes, the color is orange, for 8 mm it is blue and for 12.7 mm it is pink.

For both pen needle and insulin syringe users, you will notice that the product brand name no longer includes the BD logo and we have also included product images on all packaging for easy identification.

Have there been any changes to the products?

No, our manufacturing process and the materials used have not changed. Our products are made in the same facilities and undergo the same quality control procedures at embecta as they did under BD.

Is the color of the box changing?

For pen needles, the color of the box will not change.

For insulin syringes, the box color will change. To move forward with consistency, we have shifted our packaging so that the colors on the insulin syringe boxes align with needle length. For example, an 8 mm syringe product will be in a blue box no matter if it is a 0.3 mL, 0.5 mL or 1 mL barrel size. The barrel size is clearly called out on the box so both needle length and barrel size can be easily identified.

Will my prescription need to change?

No, as these are the same products, you will not need a new prescription from your physician for your refills. Your pharmacy will dispense to you the same product, now in the embecta packaging.

Will this change impact insurance coverage for the product?

No. The embecta products are covered by insurance just as the BD products were covered before the packaging change. Insurance coverage will remain unaffected by the change to embecta packaging.

Continuing Confidence in Your Diabetes Supplies with embecta

Although the rebranding from BD to embecta may be unexpected or even unwelcome for some, it is only a branding update. All product specifications, part numbers, and quality standards remain exactly as before.
