What a Manual Reading Is

An aneroid reading is taken by hand: the pressure is read off the manometer's calibrated dial while the measurement is taken with a stethoscope. A blood pressure reading is two numbers. The systolic, the first and higher number, is the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats; the diastolic, the second and lower, is the pressure when the heart rests between beats. A reading of 120/80 means a systolic of 120 and a diastolic of 80.
