PRODUCT DETAILS
The 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution with Applicator is an antiseptic solution for preparing intact patient skin prior to surgery, painted on with a sponge applicator. The DuraPrep formulation pairs isopropyl alcohol, which delivers a rapid kill and fast drying, with iodine povacrylex, which dries to a water-insoluble film for lasting antimicrobial persistence. The film is designed to resist wash off by irrigating fluids, blood and saline during surgery, and it helps an antimicrobial incise drape adhere to the skin. Two applicator sizes are available, matched to head, neck and small prep areas and to large areas below the neck.
Key Features and Benefits
- Helps reduce bacteria that can potentially cause skin infection.
- Sponge applicator draws the solution in and delivers a single uniform coat.
- The 26 mL applicator barrel carries an indicator line that marks the fill level for the sponge.

Warnings and Use
DuraPrep is for professional use only and is an over-the-counter antiseptic for preparing intact skin prior to surgery. It is for external use only, and because the solution contains alcohol and gives off flammable vapors, keep it away from fire or flame.
- Apply in a well-ventilated area to clean, completely dry, residue-free, intact skin. Do not microwave or heat the applicator.
- Activate the applicator: with the sponge face parallel to the floor, snap the lever on the 6 mL applicator, or press the cap end of the 26 mL applicator until fluid reaches the indicator line. Let all fluid flow into the sponge before you begin.
- Paint a single uniform coat from the incision line outward, using light pressure. Do not scrub or reprep an area, and do not allow the solution to pool; absorb excess with the sponge.
- Keep the solution out of hairy areas — wet hair is flammable, and hair may take up to 1 hour to dry.
- Do not drape or use an ignition source, such as cautery or a laser, until the solution is completely dry: at least 3 minutes on hairless skin, up to 1 hour in hair. Begin draping and using cautery only after the solution is completely dry and all solution-stained materials are removed from the prep area. The solution turns from a shiny to a dull appearance when it is dry and no longer flammable.
- When prepping skin folds, toes or fingers, hold the skin apart until it is completely dry so it does not adhere to itself.
- Do not use on patients with a known allergy to iodine or any other ingredient, on open wounds, on mucous membranes, or as a general skin cleanser on infants under 2 months of age.
- Keep out of eyes, ears and mouth. May cause serious injury if permitted to enter and remain. If contact occurs, flush with cold water right away and contact a doctor.
- Use with caution in women who are breast-feeding due to the potential for transient hypothyroidism in the nursing newborn.
- Stop use and ask a doctor if irritation, sensitization or an allergic reaction occurs; on rare occasions use has been associated with skin blistering.
- Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
- Each applicator is for a single use — do not reuse it. Professional use only.
- The film is not water soluble and may stain, so avoid contact with reusable items such as basins and instruments. Store between 20–25 °C (68–77 °F) and away from excessive heat above 40 °C (104 °F).
