How to Use the Freemie Independence II Breast Pump

Before First Use

  • Charge the pump fully before first use (2–3 hours) using the included USB charging cable. A full charge provides approximately 2.5 hours of pumping time.
  • Clean and sanitize all milk-contact parts before use. Boil breast flanges, barriers, valves, valve bases, and cups in uncovered boiling water for 10 minutes. Allow all parts to air dry completely.

Assemble the Freemie Cups

  • Place the barrier onto the breast flange.
  • Press the valve firmly onto the valve base.
  • Guide the valve base over the barrier and press the cup halves together firmly.
  • Align the cup arrow with the tubing port and press until you hear a snap to ensure a secure seal.

Connect Cups to the Pump

  • Insert tubing into the large end of the L-connector.
  • Firmly press the small end of the L-connector into the round tubing port on each cup.
  • Join tubing using the Y-connector for double pumping. For single pumping, remove one tube and cap one side.

Test Before Pumping

  • Turn the pump on.
  • Set Suction to level 10 and Cycle to level 10.
  • Confirm the barrier collapses and releases inside the cup. If it does not move, reassemble and check tubing connections.

Position Cups and Start Pumping

  • Place the cups inside a well-fitted bra with enough compression to create a proper seal.
  • Center the flange opening over the nipple.
  • Adjust suction (pink lights) from low to strong and cycle speed (blue lights) from fast to slow for comfort.
  • Use Turbo® mode by increasing the cycle setting past level 10 if desired.
  • Save up to three favorite settings using the memory buttons.

After Pumping

  • Turn off the pump.
  • Disconnect tubing and carefully remove the cups.
  • Hold cups upright and pour milk through the pour spout into a storage container.
  • Clean milk-contact parts with hot, soapy water after each use and air dry completely.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How often should I use a breast pump?

A: It depends on your needs. Many mothers pump every 2-3 hours to maintain supply, while others pump less frequently depending on feeding schedules.

Q: Which breast pumps are the best?

A: The best breast pump varies based on personal needs. Electric pumps offer speed, manual pumps are portable, and hospital-grade pumps provide the strongest suction.

Q: Do breast pumps expire?

A: While breast pumps do not have an official expiration date, their motors and parts can wear out over time. It’s recommended to replace parts as needed.

Q: How do I clean and maintain my breast pump?

A: Always clean and sterilize pump parts after each use to prevent contamination. Follow manufacturer guidelines for safe maintenance.

Q: Are breast pumps covered by insurance?

A: While some insurance providers may cover breast pumps, Medicinal Supplies does not process insurance claims. Customers should check with their provider and submit necessary documents for reimbursement on their own.

Q: Can I reuse a breast pump for multiple babies?

A: Yes, but only if it’s a closed-system pump. Open-system pumps may harbor bacteria and should not be shared.
